Should images be compressed before sending them?

I noticed sometimes when I go to send a friend some pictures the e-mail will fail and say something about the size being too large.

Can compressing the images help this or do I have to manually resize everything myself?

You should definitely compress the images first, before attempting to send them. Seeing as how modern phones or cameras can take really huge HD pictures, email software often struggles with handling them and they also most often have a limit on maximum size.
