How can I spot a virus?

I know a lot of viruses can be spread through e-mail. I am not sure if you need to download something or simply open the e-mail for this to happen.
Is there a way to spot e-mails that contain them? I have a friend who got a nasty virus through her e-mail and now I am worried myself.

I think the best way is to check out the content of your mail. Most viruses come with emails that claim that you have won a million dollars or are eligible for winning a car or a boat or something like that. They are just clickbait so you click the link and get infected.
